On April 26, Monte Jade West celebrated the 30th anniversary of the MJAA Mentorship Program with a graduation luncheon at Skyline College in San Bruno, attended by 120 guests. The event honored the 2024 mentee cohort and featured a keynote fireside chat with Jenny Ming, CEO of Rothy’s and co-founder of Old Navy, in conversation with MJAA Mentorship Chair Julie Huang. A leadership panel moderated by former MJW Chair David Jeng, with Peter Chu, Rebecca Liao, and Eddy Chan, highlighted the enduring impact of mentorship and leadership within the MJW community.
Keynote Speaker: Jenny Ming, CEO of Rothy's
Jenny Ming is the Chief Executive Officer of Rothy’s, Inc., the fast-growing retailer bringing stylish, sustainable footwear and accessories to over 4 million fans. Serving as Independent Director on Rothy’s Board since June 2022, Ms. Ming joined the Company full time in January 2024 and today leads Rothy’s as the business scales via retail, wholesale, and international expansion.
Prior to joining Rothy’s, Ms. Ming held various executive roles at Gap, Inc. including Founder and President of Old Navy from 1993 through 2006, where she led all aspects of Old Navy and its 900 retail clothing stores in the U.S. and Canada. Ms. Ming then joined specialty retailer Charlotte Russe, where as President and Chief Executive Officer she oversaw over 600 stores across the United States from 2010-2019.
In addition to Rothy’s Board, Ms. Ming has previously served on the Boards of Kendra Scott, Poshmark and Affirm and currently serves on the Boards of Levi Strauss & Co., and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan & Hospitals. Ms. Ming is deeply passionate about mentoring the next generation of women in business, and she's been recognized by Fortune, Business Week, Wall Street Journal and the New York Times for her outstanding leadership in business.
Keynote Moderator: Julie Huang, 2024-2025 Chair MJAA Mentorship Program
Dr. Julie Huang is on a mission to enable scientific breakthroughs and cultivate inclusive communities to forge a diverse, empowered generation in STEM. A tenacious woman in science and a first-generation low-income student, she defied the odds in becoming an accomplished scientist with a PhD from Stanford and a BS from Caltech. Today, she stands at the forefront of the life sciences most recently as a staff scientist at Alector Inc., where she led teams in orchestrating scientific strategies for clinical trials that hold promise in transforming the treatment landscape for neurodegenerative disease. Prior to Alector, Dr. Huang was a lead scientist at Caribou Biosciences, where she conducted pioneering studies on CRISPR-engineered microbes, envisioning novel avenues for combatting cancer, and she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Amgen, Inc.'s Inflammation and Oncology Department. A strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Huang uses her journey to mentor and inspire those from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM, guiding them in designing authentic, meaningful careers. She was a MJAA mentee in 2021-2022, Chair of the 2023 Women's Leadership Summit, and Chair of the 2024-2025 MJAA Mentorship Program.
Panel Moderator: David Jeng, CEO of Wintec Industries Inc.
David Jeng currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Board Member for Wintec Industries Inc – a Supply chain management and Manufacturing company with 30+ global locations. Prior to this role, David served as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Wintec’s Manufacturing Business, Chief Strategy Officer, Vice President of the Retail division and Vice President of Operations. Additionally, David sits on the Board for Graniterock – one the largest and longest-standing materials and infrastructure construction companies in Silicon Valley founded in 1900. David is also an active investor and advisor for AI startups, Blockchain companies, and other technology startups.
To serve the greater community, David served as Secretary General of Monte Jade West Science and Technology Association which focuses on technology and the development of next-generation Asian Leaders. He has also held other roles within Monte Jade including Chairman of the Board and Vice Chair. Additionally, David sits on the board of USC’s Viterbi Innovation Partners which is focused on building community and connections for USC alumni along with serving as an advisor for USC’s Center for AI in Society++ (CAIS++).
David received his Bachelors in Computer Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Southern California.
Panelist: Rebecca Liao, VP Corporate Controller - PayNearMe Inc.
Rebecca is an active CPA with leadership experience in Finance, Accounting, and Operations at both start-ups and public companies. She has worked in a broad range of industries including banking, software, SAAS, digital advertising, internet merchandising, retail, clean tech, semiconductor, and robotics.
“The best part of being an accountant is that my skills are transferable across many industries, and I have learned so much from my experiences with different business models.” “My passion is to create win-win situations, and I co-founded a small non-profit, Jezuba, to serve as a platform for our young leaders to practice entrepreneurial thinking while building strong interconnected communities with empathy.”
Rebecca earned her BA in Economics from Wellesley College and MS in Accountancy from Bentley College. Rebecca and her husband are both MJAA Mentorship alums and ex-chairs, and they love paying forward to the next generation of MJAA members.
Panelist: Eddy Chan, Founding Partner of Intudo
Eddy Chan is a founding partner of Intudo, an investment firm with operations in Indonesia and Silicon Valley dedicated to: (1) bringing the world to Indonesia and Indonesia to the world; and (2) bringing the world to Silicon Valley and bringing Silicon Valley to the world, with ~US$400 million in total assets under management.
Through Intudo Ventures, Intudo invests in Indonesian homegrown tech and tech-enabled companies including Xendit, Pintu, Pinhome, Jago, and more. Through the Intudo Platform, Intudo provides investors with bespoke investment opportunities in U.S. Growth Tech: Enterprise/Government, as Intudo's founding team has been venture investing in Silicon Valley for ~30 years, having been venture investors in PayPal, Palantir Technologies, Affirm, Armada, Epirus, Gecko Robotics and more.
Prior to co-founding Intudo, Eddy worked on venture investments in startups since the late 1990s, including PayPal, Palantir, and Affirm, was a founder of two venture-backed technology companies with operations in Silicon Valley and Asia, and practiced corporate/M&A law.
Eddy holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was a Global Law Scholar and endowed the Eddy Chan and Yunmi Cha Endowed Global Law Scholarship at Georgetown Law, and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley’s Walter A. Haas School of Business.
Panelist: Peter Chu, Board Member and Startup Advisor
Peter Chu is currently a board member and advisor to startups in fintech, education and media. He was the CFO and VP of Strategy and Product Management at BroadVision, Inc. Prior to that, Peter was Managing Partner at AsiaTech Ventures and Senior Advisor at Inspirior, LLC.Peter has a strong background in managing projects for investments, strategy and M&A development, and operational growth on cross-border opportunities between US, Japan and Greater China. Peter also served as a COO, Executive Chairman, co-founder and president of various tech companies throughout his career. Peter is an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and strategic advisor. He holds a BSEE degree from Stanford University and an MBA degree from Harvard University. He is a co-founder of MJAA and was formerly the Chairman of Monte Jade West.
